Why SM was bankrupt because Korean monetary crisis in late 1990s and 1st gen group was disband. SM is the biggest Kpop agency, while at that time people love Ballad Soloist/Trot singer more than Kpop (all of Kpop big groups already disband), so Kpop was Flop.
SM invest for BoA, debut her in Japan (2000) and got big success. BoA is the first Kpop debut in overseas, First Kpop hallyu wave, etc. Following BoA, SM debut TVXQ (2003) promote them in Japan and Korea. At that time only TVXQ is the biggest Kpop group. People call them God From East and for BoA as Queen Of Kpop.
Half of 20th decade is really hard time for Kpop to survive (2000-2005). BoA and TVXQ save SM, Kpop, and Whole Korea.
After 2005, Kpop begin big again.
