We begin a process starting at birth where we strive to become our vision of a successful person. What we need the most is to achieve that goal but the only way to do so is to be better than we are capable of being (becoming a god).

By the time we realize that we will never become this perfect version of ourselves that we have striven for since birth, we have compromised so much and become so jaded by failures that the solution (becoming a god) has created the problem (becoming so cold).

When you’re young you just want to be a good person, doing right by your family and those you respect.
As we grow up, some of us move on to wanting more, usually starting with money (gold).
When money isn’t enough, we turn to power (being god).
For the protagonist, the pursuit of money and power leave them feeling empty and now they strive to just be (themselves), such that they might eventually find happiness.

And I find it very powerful. One of my favorite Gojira songs, after L'Enfant Sauvage, Vacuity, and the Shooting Star... coincidentally, all songs that I see in similar ways.
Gojira's environmental songs are also amazing, but to me this theme is much more interesting. Could be my personal biases.
